We welcomed a large audience at the Kobe International House. I am sincerely grateful to the Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation for their support to the orchestra.

Both the weather and the performance were great. This time I myself was much better, compared to the end of the last year when I had been walking on crutches. I think the guitarist Yasuji Ohagi who served as soloist showcased the full breadth of his skill.

As for the “Pictures at an Exhibition” for orchestra, the interpretation splits generally into two types: one has tendency to approach to the musical world of Mussorgsky, and another is apt to focus on the tone colors Ravel gave to this suite.
In my case I had been bending toward the latter, but, how to say… this time I thought about both approaches naturally. I guess the result was a performance in the Osaka Phil style, in the Inoue style. Nevertheless, using the word “naturally” is not fair, as the music cannot be natural naturally.
Maestro Celibidache, my teacher, kept always saying: “The sounds of music are beautiful because they grow out of nature and return there.” Therefore he brought to the audience “the perfect beauty of art” on the pretext of phenomenology completely theorized. For this purpose, the musicians’ physiology, for example, was thrown on a dust-heap.

As far as I have seen and listened to, those who conduct “Pictures at an Exhibition” often pose to impress his audience, as if this piece was an excuse to display the orchestra’s capability and to play to the gallery. When I conduct it, I’m careful not to be like that and hope orchestral members perform it with joy, as each musician could show his individuality here and there in this suite.

That being the case, for the encore, we performed the famed “Boléro” in one minute. Everyone was surprised, and this encore was one hundred percent “Michiyoshi world”. Pardon me! By the way, the Osaka Philharmonic now has one more bald member!

Now onto other things. This blog is not a private diary but a public place, so I cannot write everything here, but sometimes I go far.
In Tokyo, I attended a meeting marking the 10th anniversary of the death of Hiroyuki Iwaki. He was a great person. All the attendees agreed he was contributor to the Japanese music world, who premiered numerous works and got many ideas and associates by interacting with others. I said so, too. He was a very honest man.
However, at least I myself felt uneasy with the fact that nobody talked about his music itself. Also, I got an indescribable feeling and smell, as people there (including me) were mostly old…
The class reunion… Oh, oh… I don’t want to go to any more class reunions.
