Hyogo Performing Arts Center KOBELCO Hall
Bruckner:Symphony No.8 in C minor
I'm pleased with the good result.
The concertmaster is greatly talented. I appreciate Mr. Choi very much. He’s been a good friend of mine since we worked together for the New Japan Philharmonic.
As for Bruckner No. 8, in my case, I assisted to a rehearsal of the Japanese premiere by Günter Wand conducting the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in my twenties. I also had a chance to see Sergiu Celibidache rehearsing this repertoire in Stuttgart. In London and other cities, I listened this symphony in concerts many times. I myself conducted it with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. More recently, I played it with the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra in concert, which was recorded to be released as a CD. I guess such small but constant experiences I had gained during these 40 years of persevering enriched yesterday’s my performance.
I had known by intuition that the hall was suitable for Bruckner’s music, and it was true. I’d like to thank the presenter for accepting this repertoire. Yesterday’s performance was good enough to be repeated as it was in Wien.
The Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra’s criterion of a “good performance”, I mean the level of “standard quality” of performance for them, keeps rising compared to the last concert, the Beethoven program, and the one before that (Tchaikovsky program).
The public listened to our concert in total silence, and kindly clapped their hands a lot. I heard that 800 tickets of the next concert were purchased after the concert on that very day. It happened not by any publicity, nor by any image, but by the decision after hearing our performance by their own ears. I am delighted with this kind of result. The orchestral members’ performance improved greatly during the concert compared to the general rehearsal. This is the “Osaka Phil”! I will make this level the new standard from now on. Take care, oboist member Mr. Asakawa.
